Vonnegut, my pet parrot of 16 years, is the reason I paint birds. It was he who helped me to really see birds for who they are, their complex personalities and immense capacity for emotional connection. And it seems, he's captured the hearts of many others as well (with over 400,000 combined followers on social media).
Before Vonnegut, I dare say I underestimated birds' emotional, physical and intellectual capacities. This common pet species, worth nothing more than $100-150, is often found in animal shelters because they are SO difficult to keep as pets. They are loud, destructive and often aggressive if all their needs aren’t met. But if you can meet all their needs (which is a full time career I have discovered), they are wonderful company and little darlings to have around.
