What makes Australian bird art unique?
Australia is home to some of the most diverse and striking bird species in the world. From the vibrant plumage of the Rainbow Lorikeet parrot to the iconic call of the kookaburra, Australian birds have long been a source of inspiration for artists. Australian bird art in particular, stands out for its bold colours, distinctive styles, and the deep connection it reflects between the artist and the land. Whether you're drawn to the energetic flight of native birds or the serene presence of a perched bird, Australian bird paintings offer something truly unique.
But what makes Australian bird art different from other forms of bird art? What makes my bird art different to that of others? Let’s take a closer look.
1. Australian bird art is inspired by Australia’s unique bird life
Australia boasts a stunning variety of native bird species that are found nowhere else in the world. They are incredibly colourful (despite also being very loud and with some of the most unpleasant voices)! This includes everything from the energetic blue wren to the larrikin white cockatoos, each with their own vibrant colours, patterns, and personalities.
Many Australian bird artists focus on species that are endemic to their area. It’s a celebration of local nature. The connection to these birds goes beyond aesthetic value; it’s about showcasing the rich biodiversity of Australia and its unique role in the global ecosystem. For myself personally, it’s about raising awareness about the plight of our native birds and the growing number of endangered and critically endangered Australian bird species.
2. The unique colours and chroma of Australian bird art
One of the most striking features of Australian bird art is the use of bold, vibrant colors. Australian birds are known for their bright feathers, such as the red and green of the lorikeet or the blue of the kingfisher. Though herein lies the challenge! As artists, the vibrancy of the colours we see in bird life cannot be replicated with our limited paints, so we have to use composition and clever painting techniques to try to replicate the vividness of the different hues. Only an experienced artist will have the knowledge and skill set to be able to do this.
3. Incorporating the unique Australian landscape
Of course, all bird paintings need a background. The Australian landscape is certainly unique. The Australian outback, bushland, and coastal regions create a strong sense of place, tying the birds to the environment in which they live.
4. The role of First Nations influence on Australian bird art
Australia's First Nation artists have been capturing the beauty of local wildlife for thousands of years, often using symbols, patterns, and dot painting techniques to represent animals and birds. Their designs are rich in symbolism and cultural importance. While I personally am not of First Nations heritage, I do feel it is very important to have an element of storytelling in any Australian bird artworks.
5. The everyday life of Australian bird artists
In Australia, we are surrounded by birds! So we have a deep connection to our subject matter. Often a painting is inspired by a relationship with a wild bird, such as a Magpie or fairy wren.
Personally, I spend many hours observing birds in their natural environment. I also work alongside wildlife carers to tell the story of individual birds that have come into care. It is important to me to give voice to those that don’t have a voice (in human terms anyway). By spending time quietly observing and interracting with both domestic and wild birds, I really get to see the personality of each individual. So each of my paintings is a reflection of the time spend observing and understanding each bird species.
6. The growing global recognition of Australian bird art
While Australian bird art has traditionally been popular within Australia, its appeal is now growing globally. Bird lovers and art collectors around the world are drawn to the unique style, vivid colors, and cultural significance of Australian bird paintings. The distinctive quality of the birds and the deep connection between artist and subject has made this genre of art increasingly sought after on the international stage.
Many collectors are drawn to my work, not just for the aesthetic beauty, but for the story behind the painting and its connection to a specific Australian bird species.
